What Are the Types of Diabetes?

Pre-diabetes

Pre-diabetes is the term used for when the body makes plenty of insulin but is not able to use it properly. Blood sugar levels are higher than normal, but lower than those seen with diabetes.

There are three main types of diabetes:

  • Type 2 is the most common form of diabetes. In type 2 diabetes, the body does not make or absorb enough insulin to keep blood glucose levels normal. Type 2 diabetes is usually diagnosed in middle-aged and older adults, but can develop at any age, even during childhood.
  • Type 1 diabetes is when the body is unable to make insulin. Diagnosis of type 1 diabetes typically occurs in children and young adults, but can develop at any age. People with type 1 diabetes need to take insulin every day.
  • Gestational diabetes can develop during pregnancy and often goes away after the baby is born.
