July/August 2023 The Doctor Is In

Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women of all races and ethnicities around the world. In fact, in the U.S., 1 in 8 women will get breast cancer at some point in her life. With early detection and new treatments, chances for survival increase. That’s why it’s so important for women to stay current on screening mammograms. A screening is just like wearing a seatbelt when you drive or a helmet when you ride a bike. Mammograms save lives by detecting cancer early, allowing for more treatment options and a better chance of recovery.

May/June 2023 The Doctor Is In

Mental health is an area that may be looked away from or minimized compared to other health concerns. Yet, the rate of mental illness in the United States continues to increase. It’s estimated one in five Americans struggle with mental health issues, compared to 4-7% who have heart disease. Just as people can learn to become first responders for people with cardiac arrest by learning CPR, you can learn how to respond to people struggling with mental distress. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) promotes five steps to help someone in emotional pain in their #Bethe 1 campaign.

March/April The Doctor Is In

The Beatles warned us that “One is the loneliest number.”

I recently had an opportunity to attend a presentation by the U.S. Surgeon General, PHS Vice Admiral Vivek Murthy. His central message:

Loneliness – the “tobacco of our time” – is the greatest health threat facing Americans today. Loneliness can be described as the feeling when our need for social contact and relationships is not met.

Human beings are social beings by nature. Yet, with the COVID-19 pandemic, the pendulum swung hard in the direction of social isolation, especially in our workplaces, shopping habits, and in the lives of people with health risks.
